academic editing

In addition to clinical practice, I currently provide academic proofreading and editing services to professional authors of psychological and mental health content. My real-world clinical experience and subject-matter expertise afford me a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the topics that I edit, resulting in a better end product.

I started editing at the beginning of my psychology career; I honed those skills several years ago while working in higher education as the associate director and outreach coordinator at a college counseling center. My formal job responsibilities in that role required extensive academic writing and editing, and I was responsible for editing the work of several different types of mental health professionals. I have provided editing for other psychologists, clinical social workers, neurologists, mental health counselors, online wellness platforms, alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselors, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and postdoctoral fellows.

I have native proficiency in the English language and expertise in American Psychological Association (APA) style.

I have edited many different types of content:

Professional presentations

Academic abstracts, papers, and posters

Web content

Seminar and workshop materials

In-person and online trainings

Clinic pamphlets and informational flyers

Campus and community outreach documents

Administrative and statistical reports

Professional resumes

Academic curricula vitae

Guest lectures

Academic Editing Services

Proofreading

This service is most often utilized when scholarly content is close to being ready for final use; such content has usually already been copyedited. Proofreading is a lighter edit that entails review of content for correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar; I will also correct minor formatting issues.

Copyediting

Copyediting is a heavier form of editing. For example, I will review your content for consistent use of APA style guidelines, grammatical and syntactic errors, sentence flow, formatting problems, and maintenance of academic tone. I will also ask questions and provide general comments about the structure and organization of your content. When appropriate, I will point out potential areas where clarification of a concept or review of the reference material might be helpful.

Structural/Developmental Editing

Structural editing, sometimes called developmental editing, takes a "bird's-eye view" of written content. This means that I will review your content for overall narrative consistency and provide recommendations pertaining to theme, structure, and organization. I will also point out potential areas where clarification of a concept or review of the reference material might be helpful.
